Coverbild World Press Photo Yearbook 2025
The cover of the World Press Photo 2025 book, featuring a powerful portrait of a young boy with dark, curly hair, who has had both arms amputated below the shoulder. He is wearing a white tank top, and his face is partially illuminated by warm sunlight, casting the other half in deep shadow as he gazes to the side.
A black hardcover book, World Press Photo 2025, is displayed at an angle on a white background. The red spine has white text. The front cover features a striking photograph of a young person in a white tank top, their face and chest partially illuminated by a strong, diagonal beam of light against a shadowy backdrop.
The back cover of a book, featuring a nighttime photograph of a joyous man in a black suit and glasses raising his glass in a toast. He is surrounded by a smiling crowd at an outdoor gathering. Below the image is a text description of the book, a website address, and a barcode.
An open book displays a large, black and white photograph of a vibrant and crowded party. In a dimly lit room, a group of Black people are dancing energetically with their arms raised. In the foreground, one person holds a large, decorated fan high in the air, while others are captured in expressive, joyful motion.
An open book displays a two-page photograph with the headline GAZA UNDER ISRAELI ATTACK. The photo shows a street scene at dusk where a building in the background is exploding in a cloud of dark smoke and a shower of fiery sparks. In the foreground, people are silhouetted as they stand on the street and watch the destruction.
An open book displays a full-page photo with the headline ATTEMPTED ASSASSINATION OF DONALD TRUMP. The photograph shows Donald Trump with a bloodied right ear being urgently surrounded and rushed off a rally stage by several Secret Service agents in dark suits. The agents form a protective barrier around him in front of a crowd and American flags.
A collage of six photos depicting the life of the Tūhoe people in New Zealand. The four smaller images below show children on a vehicle, children eating watermelon, a misty landscape with horses, and a person gathering edible ferns.
A photo collage in six parts shows the effects of a severe drought in the Amazon. Images include a woman looking out over a dry riverbed from her home, aerial views of shrunken rivers and grounded floating homes, a man standing near a beached boat, and children bathing in extremely shallow water.
A two-panel artwork in a stark red and black color palette. On the left, a silhouetted airplane flies over a building. On the right, a surreal image shows numerous airplanes standing vertically on a rocky, snow-covered mountain.

A two-page photo essay from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The top half features two large photos: fishermen in a canoe on a lake and a bustling street market with women selling fish. The bottom half shows four smaller photos: canoes beached on a shore littered with plastic, a man mending nets near his children, a fisherman sleeping on his fishing nets, and an aerial view of the Ruzizi Dam. Each photo has a caption detailing the scene in Goma or Bukavu.
A powerful portrait of a young boy with amputated arms, wearing a white mesh tank top. Bathed in harsh sunlight against a plain wall, his face is half in shadow, and he has a somber expression. The image is a book cover with the text World Press Photo 2025 in a red banner on the left.
A wide, black and white photograph by Carlos Barrera captures a large, dense crowd of incarcerated men with shaved heads in El Salvador. They are packed tightly together in a holding cell, most with their backs to the viewer. In the center, one man turns his head to look directly at the camera with a somber expression.

The spread includes six photos: a porter on a steep mountain path; a widow's veil hanging on a tree at night; a person looking at snowy mountains from a rooftop; a son kissing his mother farewell; a secret Kurdish language class in a small room; and falling snow at night. Independent photojournalism and documentary photography are indispensable tools of political education for a democratic society and an essential part of shaping public opinion—especially in our so-called 'post-factual' times. In recognition of this, the independent non-profit organization World Press Photo Foundation, based in Amsterdam, has been presenting the World Press Photo Award for the best photo, the best story, the best longterm project of the year for more than six decades. The winning images in the various categories tell bold stories and provide invaluable insights into the state of our world. The award-winning photos will be announced at the same time as the book launch and presented in a traveling exhibition. So it is and remains extremely exciting to see which works will be selected from thousands of submissions—and of course which photo will be the actual cover illustration! Furthermore, 2025 marks the 70th anniversary of the foundation. This will be celebrated in the book by presenting many well-know historical winning photos.
