Coverbild World Press Photo Yearbook 2024
The back cover of a book set against a white background. The cover features a striking black-and-white photograph of a person with dark, curly hair, viewed from behind. A hand gently rests on their shoulder, near a tattoo on their neck that reads BE BRAVE. A block of German text and a barcode are visible on the right side.
A product shot of the World Press Photo 2024 hardcover book, shown at an angle on a white background. The cover features an emotional photograph of a woman in a blue dress and tan hijab cradling a body wrapped in a white shroud. The book has a red spine with the title in white letters.
An overhead view of an open book displaying a two-page spread. The pages feature a collage of black and white photographs with German captions below. The images show a variety of scenes, including intimate portraits of young people, a group standing by a metal fence, a person doing a backflip on a court, an industrial landscape, and a concrete apartment building.
An open book displaying a two-page photo essay. The top of the left page shows a young girl sleeping on a bed in a modest room. The top right shows a woman holding a child in a rustic kitchen. The bottom half features four smaller photos: a busy port at sunrise, people swimming in a lake, children sitting by green water, and a person diving off a wooden pier at sunset.
An open book on a white surface, showing a photograph of a person's reflection in a small, ornate vanity mirror. The mirror sits on a cluttered table against a bright blue wall, and the face in the reflection is half-lit, creating a somber, intimate mood.
A thought-provoking black and white photograph of an Asian family of five. They are seated in a row, and each person hides their face by holding up a large, stylized portrait drawing. The drawings depict various life archetypes: a young woman, a graduate, an elderly couple, and a professional woman. The setting includes a tea set on a low table and a mountain landscape painting in the background.
A two-page magazine spread with a grid of eight images exploring queer identity and space exploration. The layout features a portrait of astronaut Sally Ride, a press conference for the GAY SPACE AGENCY, and an empty hearing room with homophobic slurs on the chairs. Other surreal and archival images include a figure in a red glowing suit under the stars, a person in a hazmat suit covered in photos, and a vintage photo of men in cowboy hats.
A two-page magazine spread with German text featuring a collage of photographs documenting a family's daily life. The images depict a mother and daughter walking down a street, a congregation inside a church, children playing outside, an elderly man sitting thoughtfully at a table, and intimate family moments at home.

The Images That Matter
Independent photojournalism and documentary photography are indispensable tools of political education for a democratic society and an essential part of shaping public opinion—especially in our so-called 'post-factual' times. In recognition of this, the independent non-profit organization World Press Photo Foundation, based in Amsterdam, has been presenting the World Press Photo Award for the best photo, the best story, the best longterm project of the year for more than six decades. The winning images in the various categories tell bold stories and provide invaluable insights into the state of our world. A photograph by Mohammed Salem for Reuters from the Gaza war is the press photo of the year and also the cover illustration - it shows a Palestinian woman holding her five-year-old niece, who was killed when a missile hit her home in Khan Younis, Gaza, tightly on her lap.
