Coverbild World Press Photo Yearbook 2025
The cover of the WORLD PRESS PHOTO 2025 book, showing a portrait of a young boy with amputated arms wearing a white tank top. He is dramatically lit from the side by warm light, casting one half of his face and body in deep shadow. He has a solemn expression and is looking away from the camera.
The back cover of a book, showing a photograph of a celebratory outdoor gathering at night. A man in a suit and glasses stands in the center, laughing and raising a glass in a toast, surrounded by smiling guests. Below the image is a block of German text, a website address, and a barcode.
A hardcover book, World Press Photo 2025, is displayed at an angle on a white surface. The cover features a photograph of a young person in a white tank top, their face and chest partially illuminated by a diagonal slash of bright sunlight against deep shadow. The book has a black cover and a red spine with the title in white text.
An open book features a two-page photograph showing a close-up of a tangled mass of vibrant blue fishing net. Numerous small, silvery fish are caught and entangled within the mesh. German text is printed above and alongside the image.
An open book with a photo spread across two pages, showing portraits of weary travelers on a bus. The left page shows a woman holding a young child, both illuminated by the cool, blue light of dusk from the window. The right page is a close-up of a man's face, half-lit, with a somber and exhausted expression. German text frames the photographs.
A photograph by John Moore displayed in an open book. The image captures a group of migrants at night, wearing translucent plastic ponchos and huddled together on rocky terrain. A warm, orange light, likely from a fire, illuminates them from a low angle, creating a stark contrast with the surrounding darkness.
A photo collage of six images depicting life in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The photos show fishermen on a lake, a busy street market, canoes on a trash-covered shore, a man mending nets with his children, a fisherman sleeping, and an aerial view of the Ruzizi Dam.
A two-page photo spread with six images of the Tūhoe people of New Zealand. The photos show men in traditional dress performing a haka; a youth women's rugby team performing a haka; children riding in a utility vehicle and eating watermelon; a misty, forested landscape; and a person foraging for edible fern fronds.
A group of Chinese migrants in hooded plastic ponchos huddle together for warmth around a fire at night. The somber scene at the US-Mexico border is illuminated only by the warm, orange glow of the flames from below, casting long shadows in the darkness.
A stark black-and-white photo from a magazine spread showing a large, crowded group of male prisoners in El Salvador. The men have shaved heads and wear light-colored shirts as they sit packed together in a holding area. One man in the center of the crowd turns to look directly at the camera.
A photo collage with six images in two rows documenting the effects of a severe drought in the Amazon. The pictures show aerial views of vast, dried-up riverbeds, floating homes stranded on land, and local people, including children, struggling to navigate the remaining shallow, muddy water.
A two-page magazine spread with six black and white photos documenting the lives and hardships of Kurdish people in Iran. The images depict a Kolbar on a dangerous mountain path, a wedding veil on a tree symbolizing widows, a mother and son's farewell, a secret Kurdish language class, and snowy landscapes.
A diptych of two images in a stark red and black graphic style. On the left, the black silhouette of a passenger jet flies over a building against a red sky. On the right, a squadron of black fighter jets is set against a rugged, snow-covered mountain tinted red.
A powerful bust portrait of a young boy who is a double amputee, wearing a white mesh tank top. Strong sunlight from the side illuminates half of his pensive face and body against a plain wall, casting the other half in deep shadow. The image is a book cover for World Press Photo 2025.

Independent photojournalism and documentary photography are indispensable tools of political education for a democratic society and an essential part of shaping public opinion—especially in our so-called 'post-factual' times. In recognition of this, the independent non-profit organization World Press Photo Foundation, based in Amsterdam, has been presenting the World Press Photo Award for the best photo, the best story, the best longterm project of the year for more than six decades. The winning images in the various categories tell bold stories and provide invaluable insights into the state of our world. The award-winning photos will be announced at the same time as the book launch and presented in a traveling exhibition. So it is and remains extremely exciting to see which works will be selected from thousands of submissions—and of course which photo will be the actual cover illustration! Furthermore, 2025 marks the 70th anniversary of the foundation. This will be celebrated in the book by presenting many well-know historical winning photos.
