The regional sections cover Africa, Europe, South America, Asia, North & Central America, and Southeast Asia & Oceania. Each region lists categories like Singles, Stories, and Long-Term Projects with their page numbers. The Global Winners section lists top awards, including Photo of the Year and Story of the Year.
A page from a publication titled New Capital, featuring an article and a large photograph. The photo shows construction workers on a vast, paved plaza in Egypt's New Administrative Capital. In the foreground, a worker in a blue shirt shovels sand. In the background stands a monumental, neoclassical building with tall white columns, reminiscent of an Arc de Triomphe, under a clear blue sky.
An overhead, slightly blurred photo shows Israeli police in full tactical riot gear, including helmets and vests, advancing on a street. A Palestinian flag lies on the ground near their feet. A white text box in the upper portion of the image reads: ASIA SINGLES SHIREEN ABU AKLEH'S FUNERAL MAYA LEVIN.
A photo essay in five images depicting the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. The largest photo shows a malnourished baby being examined in a clinic. Four smaller images below show armed Taliban at a snowy checkpoint, a family in a displacement camp, a boy revealing a scar from selling a kidney for money, and an armed soldier guarding men at prayer.
A color photograph on a page of text shows a young Iranian woman with dark, uncovered hair sitting at an outdoor table in a bustling square. She looks directly at the camera while other women, wearing black chadors that cover them completely, walk in the background.
A page from a publication titled Net-Zero Transition, with a large photo of a worker harvesting tomatoes in a modern greenhouse. The worker, wearing a mask and hairnet, is surrounded by tomato plants illuminated by the purple and red glow of overhead LED grow lights.
A collage of three photos of New York drill scene artists. The top photo shows B-Lovee, a young Black man, sitting in an armchair in a room with peeling paint and photos on the wall. The bottom left photo shows Kenzo B, a young Black woman with long pink hair, crouching outdoors in a pink outfit. The bottom right photo shows Young Devyn, a young Black woman with braided hair, leaning on a red railing.
A black and white photograph of three workers in oil-stained protective suits and respirators carefully walking over a rocky shore next to the hazy ocean. They are part of the cleanup effort for the 2022 Repsol oil spill in Lima, Peru.
A photo collage of five images depicting life in Venezuela. The large top photo shows two uniformed militia members with rifles against a city backdrop. Below are four smaller photos showing a cityscape between tall buildings, a man carrying a woman across a river, a couple in a concrete courtyard, and a close-up of riot police arresting a person on the ground.
An aerial collage of three false-color infrared photographs depicting floods in New South Wales, Australia. In the images, vegetation is colored a vibrant red and pink, while the floodwaters are a bright turquoise. The top, largest image shows a long bridge crossing a wide, flooded river. Below are two smaller images of winding rivers flowing through rural and agricultural landscapes.
A low-angle, wide shot of a vast glacier surface under a heavy, overcast sky. A meltwater stream carves a path through the foreground, which is a textured mix of dirty ice and patches of white snow. In the distance, a massive range of snow-covered mountains rises up, with a rocky, brown mountain slope visible to the right.
A mixed-media artwork featuring a black-and-white line drawing of a landscape with a collaged color photograph. In the drawing, a person in a hijab reads under a large tree, with a sun rising over hills. The torn photograph in the center shows a young man in a plaid sarong standing in a doorway, creating a surreal portal between the two scenes.
A page from a publication, numbered 218, titled Global Jury. Below a world map logo, the text is an article by Brent Lewis, the Global Jury Chair, reflecting on the 2022 World Press Photo contest. The text, arranged in three columns, discusses the jury's selection process, the new regional format, and the significance of the winning photographs and stories from around the world, including those from Ukraine and Afghanistan.

| The images that matter
Since 1955, the annual World Press Photo Contest has set the standard in visual journalism. The 2023 Yearbook showcases the most striking press photographs and compelling reports from 2022, carefully selected from thousands of entries by six regional and one global jury of acclaimed independent professionals. Providing a diversity of perspectives from all over the world, the awarded works bear witness to the events that shaped this past year, and document in long-term projects the ongoing issues we face. Recognizing the importance of photojournalism and documentary photography at a time, when the truth is contested, the awarded images share courageous stories and present invaluable insights― from warzones, the struggle for civil rights and political empowerment, to the visible impact of the climate crisis, which could be felt in 2022 more acutely than ever.

The yearbook is also available in German and French

For six decades, the WORLD PRESS PHOTO FOUNDATION has been working from its home in Amsterdam as an independent, non-profit organization. To provide truly global perspectives, the foundation launched a new regional strategy in 2022. From January to March 2023 six regional and one global jury will decide on 24 regional and 4 global winners.
