How significant were wars for the emergence of national identities in Switzerland in the past and present, and how influential will they be in the future? How does Switzerland define itself in relation to war, both collectively and individually? How does war affect people and the environment in Switzerland? Case studies reveal patterns of interpretation that Switzerland has used to construct and position itself during times of war and peace, in particular how Swiss neutrality arose from a variety of entanglements in war. The concrete effects of wars on social life in Switzerland are also highlighted. This reveals tensions and contradictions between national self-images and role models and the realities of everyday life.
