A biography based on known and new sources and an impressive portrait of the enigmatic artist and his time.

Since picking up a paintbrush in 1886, Munch has led a "life in a storm" in which art stands above all else: his days are erratic and characterised by restlessness and debauchery, while his reputation as an artist grows. When he returned to Norway in 1908 after a nervous breakdown, he was celebrated as a genius, while the Germans revered him as a Germanic master - a reputation that only became problematic when Hitler came to power in 1933. Munch never really found his place in the new century; he was at the height of his time, but always alone.

The biography is clearly structured and contains numerous colour illustrations.

Edvard Munch (1863-1944) was one of Modernism's most significant artists. His tenacious experimentation within painting, graphic art, drawing, sculpture, photo and film has given him a unique position in Norwegian as well as international art history.

Ivo de Figueiredo (born 1966) is a Norwegian historian, biographer and author. He has written several critically acclaimed books, including biographies and works on cultural and intellectual history. Figueiredo is known for his detailed research and captivating narrative style, making complex historical topics accessible to a wide audience. He has received numerous awards for his contributions to Norwegian historiography.
