A comparative appraisal of two artists, each of whom is closely concerned with the human body, human physiognomy and the human psyche, opens up a fascinating perspective. Both Cindy Sherman and Jürgen Klauke work in the medium of photography. They are nearly always their own protagonists, playing roles in real and virtual situations. In adaptations of classical genres of painting, Cindy Sherman creates compositions that assume a peculiar state of suspension. Jürgen Klauke also employs staging as a tool in his art. Both artists slip as figures for identification into hybrid masks in order to lose themselves in a constructed world of obsessions.
