In the course of some twenty years of exhibition activity, the New York artist Jonathan Borofsky, born in Boston in 1942, has regularly photographed his installations or had them photographed by others - together with "visitors" in each case. Borofsky regards the role of the viewer as an important element in the documentation of his spatial installations, and he even goes so far as to integrate stylised viewer figures (as in Chattering Men, for example) into some of his later works. This book presents a number of photographs arranged for the first time in chronological order and thus emphasises a hitherto unexplored aspect of the reception of Borofsky's art. At the same time, the publication offers a first comprehensive view of the previous work of this two-time "documenta" participant. In an extensive interview, Udo Kittelmann and the artist discuss the formal and substantive meanings Borofsky attributes to the "audience" in his art.
