Who would expect to find an influential center of contemporary art in the small Black Forest town of St. Georgen? Yet, with the collection activities of the St. Georgen Grässlin family, this is just what it has become, and for quite a number of artists. Since the early eighties, members of the Grässlin family, in a programmatic and consistent way, have been collecting non- conformist art that reflects social and political contexts. For the most part, these are hardly coventional pieces, and some are even quite controversial: works by the 'Hamburg trio' Werner Büttner, Martin Kippenberger and Albert Oehlen, plastic works by Hubert Kiecol and Meuser. In rented stores and shop windows, a perplexed audience was confronted with installations by Georg Herold or a 'home corner' with furniture and objects by Franz West. The presentation of pieces by artists such as Cosima von Bonin, Kai Althoff and Heimo Zobernig followed close behind. This book testifies to the superb quality of the works collected as well as to the remarkable inner coherence of the objects. The artists: Cosima von Bonin, Werner Büttner, Clegg & Guttmann, Mark Dion, Fischli & Weiss, Günther Förg, Isa Genzken, Asta Gröting, Georg Herold, Hubert Kiecol, Martin Kippenberger, Meuser, Albert Oehlen, Tobias Rehberger, Andreas Slominski, Franz West and others. Exhibition Schedule: Deichtorhallen Hamburg 23.3.-8.7.2001
