| German Impressionism on paper—masterpieces of the delicate kind!
German Impressionism is usually considered on offshoot of its French precedent and is associated with the paintings of Max Liebermann, Lovis Corinth, and Max Slevogt. Yet precisely the lesser known genre of works on paper—a medium used for the spontaneous and direct depiction of landscapes—illustrates so vividly the widespread impact and groundbreaking role of Impressionism on the development of German modernism. The volume presents 150 wonderful works of art—drawings, watercolors, gouaches, pastels, and prints. It demonstrates how a freer form of artistic statement embraced abstraction and expression to subsequently triumph over the naturalism of the academies. Including Liebermann, Corinth, and Slevogt, the book features important works from 1880 to 1925 by Lesser Ury, Maria Slavona, Anna Gerresheim, Otto Modersohn, Christian Rohlfs, and Arthur Illies, in addition to the photographs of Heinrich Kühn. Ausstellungen/Exhibitions: Internationale Tage Ingelheim, Altes Rathaus, Ingelheim 5.4.–15.6.2014 | Ernst Barlach Haus, Hamburg 29.6.–28.9.2014
