| Extensive presentation of Surrealist and New Figuration masterpieces from Theo Wormland’s renowned collection
In the 1960s fashion mogul Theo Wormland (1907–1983) began building one of the most important private collections of Surrealist works; in 2013 it was bequeathed to the Pinakothek der Moderne, where it will be honored by a special, large exhibition. The collection, which has been on permanent loan to the Modern Art Collection in Munich for thirty years, contains world-famous masterpieces by Max Ernst, René Magritte, and Pablo Picasso, as well as figurative sculptures and paintings from the 1960s and ‘70s. In their works, artists such as Bruno Goller, Konrad Klapheck, Bernard Schultze, and Richard Oelze exaggerated or alienated reality in the wake of Surrealism. The catalogue not only presents the 65 works of art and artists in the Theo Wormland Collection, but also the many acquisitions made by the Theo Wormland Foundation for the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen (Bavarian State Collections of Paintings), as well as the many different exhibitions and publications supported by the foundation. Exhibition schedule: Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, September 14, 2013–January 26, 2014
