It was not until the early twentieth century that the first reports on the culture and architecture of the Dogon people in western Africa reached Europe. The Dogon live on the highlands of Mali, on either side of the Bandigara Escarpment, which is over one hundred miles long. Members of this ethnic group built adobe dwellings, granaries, ritual sites, and assembly rooms that are strikingly sculptural and set into steep, hard-to-reach cliffs or located on the high plateau.
