Over his long career, the brilliant Catalan artist Joan Miró (1893– 1983) created a fascinating, multi-faceted oeuvre. Inspired at first by the works of Van Gogh, Cézanne, Matisse, and Picasso, he went through an important Surrealist phase and then moved on to develop his own inimitable visual vocabulary. This book is being published in conjunction with a large retrospective of his career. It features around 150 works from a period covering six decades—works that had a profound influence on twentieth-century art. Miró’s paintings comprise the focal point of the publication, but it also contains additional works on paper, ceramics, and sculptures. For more than thirty years, art historian Jean-Louis Prat was head of the renowned Fondation Maeght in St. Paul de Vence in the south of France. Prat was also friend of Miró’s, and he has curated the exhibition and written the erudite texts for this volume.
