On the occasion of the centennial of its foundation, the Deutscher Verein für Kunstwissenschaft (DVfK) has gathered together all of Matthias Grünewald’s known drawings in an opulent volume of facsimiles. The master’s surviving studies count among the most important treasures of the German Renaissance. Max J. Friedländer, who brought to light the most significant collection of the master’s drawings ever, recognized early on Grünewald’s outstanding drawing technique as, so to speak, the antipode to Albrecht Dürer’s graphic art.In this large-format volume, Grünewald’s graphic works are presented in carefully color-matched reproductions in their original size and accompanied by critical commentary. Thus it joins the ranks of the scholarly tradition established by earlier volumes of drawings published by the DVfK, which initiated this practice in 1927 with the first complete catalogue of Grünewald’s drawings documented at that time, a book that has long been out of print. Later volumes of drawings featured the work of artists such as Martin Schongauer, Albrecht Dürer, Hans Baldung Grien, Hans von Kulmbach, Hans Schäufelein, and Lucas Cranach the Elder.
