Film and video have had a life of their own in the field of art for many years now. Unlike the cinema, images can be projected onto any wall, arrayed side by side, or organized in physically accessible installations. The six chapters of this book document explorations of identity, body image, and the conditions set by the technical image using approximately twenty-five important film and video works. The publication examines the history of film and video art with a focus on projections in the exhibition space. A dialogue involving contemporary works by artists such as Pipilotti Rist, Rodney Graham, and Eija-Liisa Ahtila and older works from the 1960s and ‘70s by Marcel Broodthaers, Dan Graham, and VALIE EXPORT, makes it obvious how much thematic focus as well as technical and artistic arrangements have changed over the decades—and at the same time, how it was possible for film and video to develop their own tradition “beyond cinema.” (German edition ISBN 978-3-7757-1873-8)  Exhibition schedule: Hamburger Bahnhof, Museum für Gegenwart/Rieckhallen, Berlin, September 2006–February 2007
