The British artist Simon Starling (*1967) belongs to a younger generation of conceptual artists concerned with the narrative dimension of art. Starling investigates modernistic design objects, materials and concepts that exemplify the prevailing ideologies and production factors of specific regions, cultures, and generations. By breaking down, transforming and reconfiguring his source material, he writes a new chapter in its history while raising questions about complex cultural and aesthetic phenomena of our time. This strikingly designed book provides an unprecedented overview of the artist's oeuvre. Starling, who now lives in Berlin, probes complex cultural and aesthetic issues in works such as those presented recently at exhibitions at the Portikus in Frankfurt and the São Paulo Biennial. Also featured are Starling's most recent projects realized for his first survey exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Basel in the summer of 2005. Exhibition schedule: Kunstmuseum Basel, Museum für Gegenwartskunst, June 11-August 7, 2005 · The Power Plant, Toronto, December 10, 2005-March 5, 2006
