This collection of sketches, drawings, and blueprints made by Carlo Scarpa for his cabinet-maker Anfodillo documents this exceptional architect's mastery of the art of design.
For almost thirty years, the Italian architect Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978) collaborated with the well-known Venetian cabinetmaker Saverio Anfodillo to construct his designs. This publication documents their work and gives a survey of the oeuvre of one of the outstanding architects of the twentieth century. In 1999, The Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna was able to acquire from the cabinetmaker's archives a number of design drawings, including the Museo di Castelvecchio in Verona (built 1956-1964), the Galleria Querini Stampalia (1961-1963), and the Tomba Brion in San Vito di Altivole (1970-1978), but also some furniture design sketches and wooden models of design details, such as sketches for a table for composer Luigi Nono. This publication presents for the first time plans, sketches, blueprints, and models from this collection, complemented with photographs of Scarpa's most important built projects. Exhibition schedule: MAK, Vienna April 9 - November 23, 2003
