This book, with works from over 30 internationally renowned artists, explores the border areas between photography and film, a field of growing interest among contemporary photographers.
In the past decades, the border area between photography and film has emerged as an important field of contemporary photographic art. Well-known exponents include the American artist Cindy Sherman with her Film Stills, a series of black-and-white self portraits evoking film stills from the forties and fifties both in form and content, or the Australian Sam Taylor-Wood, whose photographic panoramas - up to ten metres long - forge oppressing interpersonal dramas from individual pictures, not unlike the segments of unrolled film reels. With works by 34 international artists, this book is the first to be dedicated to a growing artistic fascination. Based on the observation that at the beginning of the 21st century the history of the moving picture is at an end and yielding fast to the reality of accelerated information, the book bridges the gap between the 'classical' positions of photography in the eighties and nineties and the highly complex Internet pieces fed by the media, film and photography. The artists: Doug Aitken, Heike Aumüller, [E.]Twin Gabriel, Douglas Gordon, Isabell Heimerdinger, Ute Friederike Jürss, Sharon Lockhart, Mariko Mori, Cindy Sherman, Lorna Simpson, Sam Taylor-Wood, Jeff Wall, Christopher Williams and others Exhibition Schedule: Villa Merkel, Bahnwärterhaus Esslingen 1.7.- 23.9.2001
