Using the examples of 15 international building projects from the past five years, this book presents the different phases of Jahn´s and Sobek´s collaboration.
In the current debate about architecture and urbanism on the threshold of the new millenium, it is becoming increasingly clear that the type of architecture which is setting the trend is that being developed in dialogue with the latest inventions in civil engineering. One particularly incisive example of a successful synthesis is the work of Helmut Jahn and Werner Sobek, who have long since achieved an international reputation with their highly intelligent and philosophical brand of architecture. Using the examples of 15 international building projects from the past five years, this book presents the different phases of their collaboration. From conventional beginnings, it progressed continuously via an additive intermeshing of technology and poetry, to reach an organic harmony of 'archi-neering', coming up with beautiful, functional and efficient solutions. A large number of sketches, plans, models and photographs illustrate this constant dialogue and document the construction processes of the buildings. A first-time interview with Helmut Jahn and Werner Sobek, who have been working in close collaboration since 1994, gives an insight into the discourse on architecture and engineering. The architects: Helmut Jahn, born 1940 in Nuremberg. Graduated 1965 from the Technische Hochschule, Munich. Lecturing jobs at various universities. Werner Sobek, born 1953 in Aalen. 1974-1980, studied civil engineering at Stuttgart University. 1991, set up his own engineering office. Professor at Stuttgart University since 1995.
