Barnett Newman, one of the most important and influential painters of the post-war period discovered his own characteristic mode of expression in 1948 in his Onement I with a large, homogenous color field interrupted by a vertical strips - his 'zip'. In his 1948 essay, The Sublime Is Now, Newman proposed the sublime picture that illustrates nothing, symbolises nothing, pure painting, which - with its sensual-aesthetic presence - does not deal with experience but is in itself an experience, as Rothko put it.
