An abstract aerial photograph of a salt lake with distinct, wavy layers of color. From the top, there is a large section of pastel pink, followed by thin bands of white and gray salt, a vibrant stripe of golden yellow, and a deep, dark burgundy at the bottom.
A diptych of two abstract aerial photographs of a shoreline, presented side-by-side. Each image shows a layered landscape with distinct horizontal bands of color: a dark, textured area at the bottom, a vibrant mustard-yellow section, a pale strip of sand, and a grey, mottled area at the top.
A two-panel image displaying square, aerial photographs of salt evaporation ponds. The photos create an abstract, geometric composition with brown earthen dikes separating water that varies in color from pale, milky blue to a deep, dark blue, alongside areas of bright white salt.
An aerial photograph of industrial salt flats, creating an abstract geometric composition. The landscape is divided into sections with vibrant colors, including deep red, ochre, white, and dark gray, separated by narrow dikes.
A two-page spread from a book showing two abstract aerial photographs of colorful landscapes. The image on the left features stark, horizontal bands of black, red, orange, and white. The image on the right shows similar horizontal layers in various shades of green, brown, and white, with a more fragmented and textured appearance.
A diptych of aerial photographs showing a vast salt lake landscape bisected by a causeway. The left image shows a stark contrast between a pink and white shoreline and deep blue water under a clear sky. The right image displays a more muted scene with pale salt flats where golden-yellow sediment flows into the lighter-colored water, creating abstract patterns under a hazy sky with distant mountains.
A diptych of two top-down aerial photographs showing vast salt evaporation ponds. The arid landscape is covered in a geometric patchwork of rectangular and irregularly shaped pools of water in various colors, including white, gray, black, yellow, and green. These colorful ponds, separated by earthen dikes, create a striking abstract pattern against the brown ground.
An aerial diptych showing a terraced hillside covered in hundreds of salt evaporation ponds. The irregularly shaped pans create a dense, abstract mosaic of earthy colors, including white, yellow, ochre, and various shades of brown, set against the arid landscape.
An aerial view of a salt pan, presented on the right half of a white page. The landscape is a geometric patchwork of numerous rectangular ponds separated by narrow dikes. The ponds contain water in a variety of earthy colors, including rust, orange, deep green, brown, and bright white from salt deposits, creating a colorful, abstract mosaic.
An aerial, top-down photograph of a desolate, grey landscape marked with numerous dark tire tracks. The tracks form intricate, sweeping patterns around a central industrial structure that contains two large, square, ochre-colored pools of liquid. The image is positioned on the right against a white background.
A two-page book spread with a blank white page on the left and a high-angle, aerial photograph of a salt marsh on the right. The photo shows a vast, abstract patchwork of irregularly shaped evaporation ponds separated by earthen dikes. The water in the ponds is a variety of earthy colors, including shades of green, brown, yellow, grey, and rust.
A diptych of two aerial photographs showing a sprawling coastal landscape under a cloudy sky. The images capture a vast, intricate network of salt marshes or oyster farms, their rectangular water basins forming a complex mosaic of green and grey patches against the land. A town and the sea are visible in the distance.

Salt's ionic lattices are one of the central elements of organic life. But even though the extraction of sea salt is one of the oldest forms of human landscaping, we rarely ask where salt comes from and how it is produced. Sea salt production sites are found all over the world, usually located around shallow shorelines. Tom Hegen has explored these magical landscapes from the air and obtained spectacular images in the process. This gorgeously illustrated book shows how the landscape has been shaped by salt mining and how the mining process has created structures that take on an almost painterly, abstract quality in Hegen's photographs. Salt Works is a study of color and geometry, an ode to beauty of the everyday.

TOM HEGEN (*1991, Augsburg) is one of the most high-profile aerial photographers of our time. In his works, the Augsburg-based photographer documents the traces that man leaves on the earth's surface. He has received several awards, most recently the Red Dot Design Award (2021) and the German Design Award (2019).
