Coverbild Michael Tewes
A two-page spread from a book with a minimalist design. The left page is the colophon with publication information in English and German. The right page is the table of contents, titled Content — Inhalt, listing chapters and authors for a publication about the German Autobahn.
A two-page spread from a book or magazine. The left page shows a full-bleed photo of a concrete overpass in a bleak winter landscape, with the German text Ich bin Europa written on its side. The right page features the title Autobahn and text in two columns, English and German, discussing the highway system.
A composite image with two panels. The left panel shows a broken smartphone lying on dark gravel, its shattered screen reflecting a blue sky and bare tree branches. The right panel contains text on a light gray background, with the title in English, From landscape enjoyment to damage prevention: Autobahn landscapes between integration and alienation, and in German, Vom Landschaftsgenuss zur Schadenvermeidung: Autobahnlandschaften zwischen Eingliederung und Entkoppelung, by Thomas Zeller and Alexander Gall.
A two-page spread with a blank left page and a photograph on the right. The photo shows a low-angle view from underneath two parallel, curving concrete overpasses supported by large pillars, stretching across a green, forested landscape on a foggy day.
A photograph on the right side of a white page shows a herd of light-colored cows taking shelter on muddy, straw-covered ground beneath a large concrete overpass. Several cows stand while one lies down, all positioned under the massive bridge supported by thick, round pillars. A rural landscape with trees is visible in the distance under an overcast sky.
A two-panel photographic spread. On the left, a close-up of a concrete tiled wall is covered in many abstract gray marks from repairs. On the right, a low-angle view shows a large metal truss with stadium lights angled against an overcast sky, with a white wall in the foreground.
A two-page photo spread contrasting highway scenes under overcast skies. On the left, a sound barrier wall is painted in three horizontal bands of teal, from light to dark. On the right, an empty asphalt road runs alongside a grey metal barrier and a large, angular concrete overpass.
A two-panel photograph. The left panel shows the side of a large white semi-trailer truck with a blue chassis parked in an empty lot. The right panel shows a solitary, bright blue metal picnic table and two benches on a paved rest area, with a road and a line of trees in the background.

Highways are more than mere traffic routes - they are symbols of speed and mobility; in 1930s Germany, they served propaganda purposes. Today they are central infrastructures. In this volume, photographer Michael Tewes devotes himself to the roads that have relentlessly carved paths across our country and through its nature, as well as to their special architectures. Often perceived as a monotonous stopover for people on their way to a destination, Tewes brings the highway into our conscious perception and shows it as an architectural building form in its own right. This monograph is the result of a six-year project and is published in parallel with the exhibition at the Deutsches Museum in Munich.

MICHAEL TEWES is a photographer and artist. He studied in Dortmund, Potsdam, and Chicago. In addition to artistic projects, he works as a photographer for well-known brands. Tewes has won the Körber Fotopreis and the IF Design Award, among others, for his work.
