Coverbild Gabriele Rothemann
A light gray hardcover book, seen from the back, stands vertically against a white background. The cover features a detailed, monochromatic illustration of a large, patterned snake coiling and twisting. Two small, black, checkered flag-like graphics are superimposed on the snake's body.
An angled, high-key shot of a grey hardcover book on a white background. The cover features the title GABRIELE ROTHEMANN in black text over a detailed, light-grey illustration of several intertwined snakes.
An open art book is displayed against a white background. The two-page spread shows a black and white graphic of a cow. The front half of the cow is a solid black silhouette, while the back half is a simple outline. This image is superimposed on a photograph of an artist's studio with large canvases. German text labels point to different parts of the cow.
An overhead view of an accordion-folded book open on a white background. The white pages feature several irregularly shaped black spots with a furry texture, creating a pattern that resembles cowhide.
A high-angle photograph of an open book lying on a white surface. The book displays a two-page spread featuring a black-and-white X-ray image. The radiograph shows a dense, chaotic assembly of various objects, including musical instruments and household items, crowded onto shelves. The objects appear as ghostly, translucent white outlines against the black background, overlapping to create a complex abstract composition.
An open art book on a white background. The left page shows a watercolor drawing of a person standing with two crutches shaped like long, reddish-brown bones. The right page displays a photograph of two similar, sculptural bone-like crutches leaning against a white wall in a corner.
An angled close-up of a grey book cover for Gabriele Rothemann. The cover features a detailed, monochrome illustration of multiple snakes with different patterns intertwined. The artist's name is printed in a black serif font across the top portion of the image.
A close-up, angled shot of a grey hardcover book titled Rothemann, published by Hatje Cantz, against a white background. The cover is adorned with a detailed, monochrome illustration of several intertwined snakes with intricate patterns.

"A single decision is enough to fundamentally, genuinely fundamentally, rethink and change everything."
Gabriele Rothemann's photographs do not simply depict an object or a situation, but rather carve out the unseen: a relationship to things long gone, a connection to times past and spaces lost. In each image resonates the reverberation of other images, in each, a wealth of possibilities of how the world can be perceived and represented is condensed. Since 1984, the Vienna-based artist has used the medium of photography in a way that does not freeze the object, but fills it with imaginary life. Rothmann's work revolves around existential questions—especially the most fundamental of them all: the finitude of life. Often abstract and precise, yet at the same time full of rich detail, the motifs from her series Dead Animals to her Miniatures about Disappearance take on a haunting presence. Thus she appeals to the empathy of her viewers and touches them not least through the sensual quality of her images, their clear-cut visual language and expressive beauty.

GABRIELE ROTHEMANN (*1960, Offenbach, Germany) studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with Fritz Schwegler and at the California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles. Based in Vienna, she has been Professor of Photography at the University of Applied Arts Vienna since 2001. Her work has been exhibited in numerous international exhibitions, and is represented in many collections.

Gabriele Rothemann: We Will Not Fight, 2023/2025
With her edition ‘We Will Not Fight’, Rothemann has created a pacifist statement and a poetic image against the warlike crises of our time. This artistic commentary is based on the discovery that pigeon feathers can be coated with a light-sensitive emulsion and then developed and fixed like photographic paper. This photo shows the photographic reproduction of the three-dimensional object feather with the exposed line of text.
