Coverbild Irène Zurkinden: Love, Life
A collage of sketchbook covers features a central watercolor drawing of a female nude, with a black-and-white photographic hand holding a drawing tool to the figure's breast.
The book cover for Love, Life by Irène Zurkinden, designed as a collage. It features layered pieces of brown, black, and green paper resembling old notebooks, with one showing a spiral binding. At the center is a watercolor and pencil sketch of a nude female torso, with a black-and-white photographic cutout of a hand holding a tool placed over the figure's neck and shoulder.
A minimalist, top-down view of three notebooks on a white background with a black central band. A large olive-green notebook is at the top. Below, a brown spiral-bound notebook shows the letters K.B.H.G, and next to it, a tan notebook has the year 1941 handwritten on its cover.
A double-page spread from a book featuring columns of black text. The pages are framed and filled with dynamic blue and black ink wash illustrations depicting stylized figures, mostly women, in chaotic and dreamlike bistro scenes.
An angled photograph of a book titled Irène Zurkinden, Love, Life, set against a white background. The book's cover has a collage-like design with brown, tan, green, and black paper sections. A watercolor painting of a nude torso from the back is affixed to the center. Part of the cover resembles a green sketchbook labeled Zeichenblock RIGI.
An open, spiral-bound sketchbook on a white background. The left page has a faint pencil sketch of a man and a woman wearing hats. The right page features a bold, gestural ink drawing of a figure with an elaborate updo, rendered in energetic, scribbled black lines.
An open art book displays a two-page spread of a colorful, painterly seascape titled Böcklinade, 1958. The painting depicts a vibrant blue sea with a large central rock formation where several figures are lounging. More people are swimming in the water and walking on a sandy beach to the right.

Accompanying the exhibition of the same name, this publication delves into the work of Irène Zurkinden, who spent more than half a century exploring her present through paintings, drawings, and sketches that are both intimate and powerfully expressive. True to the grace and beauty that define Zurkinden's work, the exhibition and publication highlight the visual allure of her art while also drawing attention to the critical issues she engaged with throughout her oeuvre. The focus of the catalogue is the first publication and presentation of some of Zurkinden's sketchbooks. The book also provides a special insight into her creative process and reveals her frank and unfiltered view of society, her bold and intense view of the world around her.

Swiss painter Irène Zurkinden (1909-1987) trained as a fashion illustrator in Basel before turning to the visual arts. A leading figure of the city's cultural scene, she spent her life between Basel and Paris—her place of longing. Throughout her career, she exhibited widely in Basel galleries and Swiss institutions, with her paintings and sketchbooks bearing witness to a unique view of society and her personal surroundings.
