At the center of the project Body. Gaze. Power. A Cultural History of the Bath is a global social practice that is as old as humankind itself. Even though it has always been associated with cleansing rituals, what is revealed here are centuries of bathing references that go far beyond such topics as hygiene, health, and wellness. In fact, as the site where the act of bathing occurs, the bathroom has always been ideologically, religiously, socially, and culturally charged, and it remains so to this day. The catalogue features objects and works of art from various epochs, lands, and cultures, from seventeenth-century barber’s bowls, heaters, or nineteenth-century hammam sandals, to works by artists ranging from Albrecht Dürer to David Hockney, Thomas Demand to Zoe Leonard. Besides the many illustrations, informative texts help readers to immerse themselves in the pleasures of various bathing cultures.

JOSEPH BEUYS (1921–1986) was a German sculptor, draftsman, and action artist. With his concepts of the “expanded concept of art” and social sculpture, he shaped the art of the second half of the twentieth century.



RAINER FETTING (*1949) studied painting at the Hochschule der Künste, Berlin, 1972–78. In 1977, he founded the Galerie am Moritzplatz together with Helmut Middendorf, Salomé, Bernd Zimmer, Anne Jud and Berthold Schepers. From 1983-1994 he lived in New York and Berlin. Recent solo exhibitions have been shown at the Berlinische Galerie, Berlin, and Schloss Gottorf, Schleswig. Rainer Fetting lives and works in Berlin and Westerland.



PABLO PICASSO (1881–1973) is regarded as the epitome of the twentieth-century artist. In addition to his paintings and sculptures, his graphic works also enjoy special fame.
