The small, colorful paintings appear to be set designs for a theater production and feature surreal scenes with German words like ACHTUNG and FREIHEIT.
An open art catalog spread. A large close-up photo shows a gray concrete wall decorated with a scattered pattern of small, metallic rings in shades of gold and silver. Highlights from an impressive career
From a single potato chip on a matchbox to larger-than-life figurative sculptures polished to a gleam, Thomas Schütte's category-defying oeuvre gives form to the incongruencies of the world we inhabit. The Düsseldorf-based sculptor, draftsman, model maker, and sometime architect Thomas Schütte works in scales ranging from small to monumental. Rooted in minimal and conceptual art, his work addresses history, art history, modes of meaning, and how art can function in the world. This eponymous monograph presents a holistic overview of his career from 1975 to the present. Taking aesthetics, form, and history as its focus, the publication features over 100 sculptures, drawings, prints, and experiments in architecture, alongside revelatory archival materials published for the first time. Essays by Paulina Pobocha, Jennifer Allen and André Rottmann provide historical and theoretical pathways into the complexity of Schütte's oeuvre, and contributions by artists Marlene Dumas and Charles Ray reflect on Schütte's significance through close readings of his work.

Thomas Schütte (*1954) has been one of the most renowned German artists since the 1980s. After studying at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Gerhard Richter and Fritz Schwegler, he has repeatedly taken part in both the documenta and the SkulpturProjekte in Münster since 1987. In 2005, he was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale. Since 2016, the Thomas Schütte Foundation has been running the Skulpturenhalle near Neuss, an exhibition venue built according to a model by the artist.
