A photograph in an open book showing a composite image that merges past and present views of a busy Berlin street. Translucent figures from an older era walk among modern-day crowds in front of a cafe with red and white striped awnings. Historic buildings and a modern glass skyscraper line the street under a clear blue sky.
An open book laid flat on a white surface, displaying a two-page composite photograph. The image artistically blends a historic, grainy, black-and-white photo of a damaged classical monument, likely the Brandenburg Gate, with a contemporary color photo of a city street with lush green trees, buildings, and cars, juxtaposing past and present.

A composite photograph of a bustling city street, blending different time periods. In the foreground, a building with red and white striped awnings has an outdoor cafe. A composite photograph blending a historic, black-and-white image of the ruined Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin with a modern, color photograph of the same busy street. The ghostly, war-damaged church and surrounding buildings are superimposed over a contemporary scene with traffic and rebuilt architecture, showing the citys past and present simultaneously.
A high-angle, composite photograph of a cityscape, blending a black-and-white image of a war-torn, ruined city with a modern, color photograph of the same location. Ghostly, bombed-out buildings are superimposed over contemporary apartment blocks and a wide road. In the foreground, a barren park with leafless trees and crisscrossing paths also shows this layered effect, illustrating destruction and reconstruction over time.
A composite photograph blending two different time periods in a park. A modern color scene with bare trees, green grass, and empty tables is overlaid with a ghostly, darker historical image. The older scene shows the same park filled with people and trees decorated with numerous round, white lanterns, creating a dreamlike effect where past and present coexist.
A composite photograph that superimposes a ghostly, black-and-white image of a war-torn city with ruined buildings over a modern, color photograph of the same street. The present-day scene shows a busy road with cars, tram tracks, and pedestrians, while the semi-transparent ruins of the past loom over them, creating a haunting juxtaposition of destruction and everyday life.
A double exposure photograph of a large urban construction site. The image layers a deep, muddy excavation pit with a semi-transparent view of a concrete foundation being built within it by workers. In the background, city buildings and construction cranes are visible.

A composite photograph blending a historical black-and-white image of an ornate corner building, Herrmann Gerson, with a modern color photo of the same location. The old structure appears ghost-like over its contemporary replacement, a sleek glass-walled building, illustrating the architectural transformation of the city street over time.
A time-lapse composite photograph of the Humboldt Forum in Berlin. On the left is a dark bronze statue of a horse fighting a lion on a pedestal. The background is a layered image, blending the historic facade of the palace with a modern structure and the adjacent park, showing it both under construction and with people enjoying the space.

Bringing the city's history to life
Internationally renowned photographer Michael Wesely captures time and life in his photographs. In Doubleday, he explores the archaeological dimensions of photography by superimposing his own photographs precisely over historical views of nineteenth and twentieth century buildings in Berlin. This allows him to leap from the past to the present: Nineteenth century flaneurs on Alexanderplatz encounter today's tourists, ruins become visible beneath the reconstructed copies of the buildings, and a park appears in place of Monbijou Palace.

MICHAEL WESELY (*1963) is a master of long exposure photography. His precise use of this photographic technique has made him world-famous. His works are represented in international exhibitions and collections. He lives and works in Berlin.
