In a spacious textile factory from the turn of the century, set in the heart of the old town in Schaffhausen, the Hallen für neue Kunst - a privately-run museum for contemporary art with a worldwide reputation - has masterpieces from the sixties to the eighties by leading international artists, the pioneers of a new concept of art. The generous architecture interacts ideally with large-scale works which can come into their own and be experienced there as in scarcely any other surroundings. Many artists have installed works there themselves, including Joseph Beuys, who chose this setting for his seminal, legendary installation, Das Kapital, just two years before his death.
