In a spacious textile factory from the turn of the century, set in the heart of the old town in Schaffhausen, the Hallen für neue Kunst - a privately-run museum for contemporary art with a worldwide reputation - has masterpieces from the sixties to the eighties by leading international artists, the pioneers of a new concept of art. The generous architecture interacts ideally with large-scale works which can come into their own and be experienced there as in scarcely any other surroundings. Many artists have installed works there themselves, including Joseph Beuys, who chose this setting for his seminal, legendary installation, Das Kapital, just two years before his death. This first volume of our new series of Museum Guides presents the Hallen für neue Kunst Schaffhausen, which has consistently been abreast of the most important artistic developments in Europe and the USA in the second half of this century, represented here by twelve recognised innovators who paved the way for a new approach which, in turn, has spectacularly extended the range of art both in terms of form and ideas. The artists: Carl Andre, Joseph Beuys, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Jannis Kounellis, Sol LeWitt, Richard Long, Robert Mangold, Mario Merz, Bruce Nauman, Robert Ryman, Lawrence Weiner
