The second edition of "working papers" focuses on the contrast between the image and the visual and the position of the image in the history and the culture of our age. This theme is at the center of the essays by Catherine David and Jean-François Chevrier. Diverse articles by the French film theore-tician and social critic Serge Daney deal with the image in advertising, with the moving image in film as well as with paradigmatic films by Godard and Rossellini. The Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben defines the close connection between cinema and history, using the films of Guy Debord as an example. In the article by the film specialist Frieda Grafe the focus is also on history, memory and film montage. She writes about Jean-Luc Godard's Deutschland Neun Null. The Russian filmmaker Alexander Sokurov and the American cineaste Jon Jost present new film projects. Ed van der Elsken and Helen Levitt show photo works. Furthermore, the artists Olaf Nicolai, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Harry Walter and Lois Weinberger are represented with articles specially written for this issue.
