While the photographer Nobuyoshi Araki has been a pop star in his birthplace Japan, in Europe and America he's been appreciated only by insiders until now. The predominantly black and white photographs revolve thematically around Tokyo, the stage for the art and life of Araki. His exquisite images of this city are filled with tremendous passion and love. In addition to the famous lascivious and very personal nudes of women Tokyo Novelle features a kaleidoscope of many urban aspects as they have never been seen before - still lifes, architecture, the sky with clouds, everyday objects, streets and squares. The photographer: Nobuyoshi Araki, born 1940 in Tokyo. Studied photography and film in Tokyo. Influenced by the films of Italian Neorealism and French Nouvelle Vague. Diverse awards for photography in Japan. Has been sued a number of times for the alleged obscenity of his female portraits. Refused in 1994 to participate in the Venice Biennale.
