Over the past few years, the Öffentliche Kunstsammlung Basel has acquired six pigment drawings by Roni Horn (born in New York in 1955). These pigment drawings, combined with other works on loan to form a presentation of 32 graphic works from the period 1982 to 1994, exhibit a number of unique technical and formal features. The paint, a vividly colored powder, is applied to the paper with a very small quantity of binder and fixed with a minimum amount of varnish, so that the pigments adhere to the paper as physical forms and are altered as little as possible. The serial repetitions of pigment forms in similar outlines and formats are separated from one another by straight cuts and - with pieces of neutral paper added - pushed together to form a seamless whole. "A configuration, in other words, that is not a collage, by no means a painting and not a drawing in the ordinary sense, but rather something much more sculptural, with shaped colour material" is the description of these works of the American sculptor offered by author Dieter Koepplin.
