The centrepiece of the comprehensive survey exhibition of the works of Hans Kupelwieser, one of the most noteworthy Austrian artists of the younger generation, is his monumental installation entitled Staumauer (Dam Wall), developed for the central MAK exhibition hall. The work is a wall constructed of 168 metal casts of a sculpted head. The term "Trans-Formation" is an apt description of Kupelwieser's overall approach to art. By estranging industrial materials and everyday objects from their original contexts, he creates photo pieces and objects which question the traditional intent of sculpture in a particularly penetrating and disturbing manner in an attempt to articulate a contemporary artistic challenge.
