Hans Christiansen (1866–1945) is among the most significant artists of German Jugendstil. His groundbreaking cover illustrations for the magazine Jugend were definitive of this diverse stylistic tendency. Having come to artistic maturity in Paris, he was summoned to Darmstadt in 1899 by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig, where together with Joseph Maria Olbrich and Peter Behrens he became one of the first seven members of the Darmstadt Artists’ Colony. There Christiansen distinguished himself as a genuinely versatile artist, who produced paintings, works of architecture and applied art, and magical festivals of lights. Illustrating the boundless ingenuity of his designs, the publication presents his entire oeuvre: paintings, wall papers, tapestries, illustrations, glass, ceramics, jewelry, stained glass windows, silverware, multiple furniture ensembles, and the most famous rose of Jugendstil. The catalogue also includes previously unknown works, such as his fashion and poster designs from the 1920s.
