| New works situated somewhere between sculpture and installation
Stefan Wissel (*1960 in Hamburg) plays an enigmatic, humorous game with colors and shapes. In his sculptural, installation-like works the Düsseldorf-based artist attempts to break up the analytical austerity of Minimal Art, to which he clearly refers, without degrading its art-historical legacy. Instead, he adds a dimension of sensitivity to its formal systematics. Wissel keeps an eye on complicated emotional worlds and condenses individual feelings into open, unavoidably ambivalent, and ambiguous structures, so that they show the nature and function of everyday things in a new and different way. Based on his most recent works, the publication not least also investigates the artist’s creative process and demonstrates how Wissel works out the aesthetic potential of simple objects, making visible their inherent beauty and poetry.
