Around 1500 Pietro Perugino (1445–1523) was one of the most successful artists of the Italian Renaissance. Even far away from the centers where he worked, Florence and Perugia, famous patrons solicited his services. Starting with a major work by the master, which King Ludwig I was able to acquire for Munich in the early 19th century, this splendid volume goes on to encompass Perugino’s entire artistic career.A concentrated look at a wide selection of paintings and drawings shows us the highly individual aesthetic and spiritual qualities of his art; special attention is paid to the works of his mature period. Besides Perugino’s religious creations, sensitive portraits and mythological depictions allow the humanist ideals of his time to come alive. Furthermore, this publication sheds light on Perugino’s role on the Florentine art scene and his importance to Raphael’s early works. Exhibition schedule: Alte Pinakothek, Munich, October 13, 2011–January 15, 2012
