The Busch-Reisinger Museum, one of the Harvard Art Museums in Cambridge, Massachusetts, recently received a bequest of more than four hundred drawings and watercolors by the German-American artist Lyonel Feininger (1871–1956). From the estate of curator and collector William S. Lieberman, these works complement significant Feininger holdings at the museum, which is also home to the Lyonel Feininger Archive. Most of the works have never before been published. As Peter Nisbet points out in his essay, Lieberman was particularly attuned to the ways in which Feininger’s drawings afford an intimate glimpse of his personality and creative development, enriching the context for consideration of the larger, more “public” paintings. Nisbet offers perspective on Feininger’s reception in the United States in the decades after his return from Germany in 1937, and, with entries on individual works, suggests directions for a more fruitful assessment of his oeuvre.
