| A hallmark within contemporary relief printing
Wolfgang Gäfgen (*1936 in Hamburg) has enjoyed an outstanding reputation in Germany and France for his drawings and prints for half a century. In 1977, a group of his drawings was shown at documenta 6. Although Gäfgen has long preferred etchings and has recently produced virtuoso mezzotints, in the late eighties he turned to producing large-format relief prints.Gäfgen’s prints are singular among contemporary relief prints, since none of them reflect the typical characteristics of woodcuts. The artist deliberately elects to work with neutral plywood panels, which have no grain, and he dispenses with all expressive gestures when carving and printing. This publication presents a selection of his works, many of which are diptychs or triptychs. Exhibition schedule: Städtisches Kunstmuseum Spendhaus, Reutlingen, November 27, 2010–January 23, 2011
