As a means of clarifying or condensing his pictorial compositions, Alex Katz’s prints occupy an outstanding place in his entire body of work. The artist is not only motivated by the opportunity to distribute the results of his work in larger numbers, but also by being able to achieve the best visual effects by means of the tenacious, innovative exploitation of print technologies. In the course of his artistic career, Katz has exhausted all of the possibilities: from traditional craftsmanship to state-of-the-art reproduction processes. Be it by tracing existing source materials, practicing strict simplification and graphic design, studying nature and the fleeting qualities of light, or adapting modern photographic or filmic vision—Katz’s visual themes always make reference to visible reality.
