| Reality, fantasy, and utopia beyond the everyday
Thinking outside the box can result in fantastic works. Tying into their creative abilities, to mental states that deviate more or less from the “normal,” the everyday, outsider artists frequently reveal the unexpected in their works. Often standing on the fringes of society, they illuminate the boundaries and contradictions of human existence, communicating a profound unease about the relationships between reality and fantasy. Ranging from the nineteenth century to the present day, the catalogue arrestingly presents the individual worlds of the artists: one is plunged into the romantic dream worlds of Aloïse, into the precise mathematical utopias of George Widener, or into the Ewigkeitenendeland (End-of-Eternities Land) of August Walla. The works direct our gaze toward the more opaque paths of thought and occasion us to fundamentally question the structures of certainty in our day-to-day lives. Exhibition schedule: Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, September 24, 2010–January 9, 2011 Featured artistsA.C.M., Aloise, Emery Blagdon, Henry Darger, Auguste Forestier, Magde Gill, Karl Junker, Friedrich Schröder-Sonnenstern, Judith Scott, Oskar Voll, August Walla, George Widener, Adolf Wölfli, Birgit Ziegert
