HAP Grieshaber, twentieth-centuryGermany’s most prominent woodcut artist.
After World War II, HAP Grieshaber (1909–1981) contributed crucial new impulses to the art of the German woodcut. In his early works, the Reutlingen-based artist still made reference to the medieval woodcut, characterized by the line. Later, his pieces became increasingly abstract, large-format, and placed more emphasis on the plane. This publication places the artist’s mature work in the context of the twentieth-century avant-garde. Grieshaber’s oeuvre is directly compared to works by Paul Klee, Lyonel Feininger, and Pablo Picasso, testifying to the fact that he was a typical representative of modern art. His participation at the first three Documenta exhibitions also demonstrates the artist’s enormous significance for art in the postwar period.Featuring around 120 large reproductions, this impressive publication traces HAP Grieshaber’s development as an artist. Exhibition schedule: Städtisches Kunstmuseum Spendhaus Reutlingen, February 15–June 1, 2009
