In 2007, multidisciplinary visual artist Hans Op de Beeck (*1969 in Turnhout) mounted a traveling exhibition called Extensions, which comprised video work, stage design, installations, sculptures, photographs, and drawings. This book documents the exhibition and also contains Spa, a short story inspired by it, written from the perspective of an eighty-year-old man looking back on his life during a forced stay at a spa resort for the elderly. The visual work focuses on the complex configurations of apparatus and architectural volumes which, as a kind of extension of the human body, seem to offer ready-made solutions to needs and ethical questions that may or may not have been posed. Both the visual art and the story revolve around the same themes: the growing denial and manipulation of one’s own body, the changing way we handle information and knowledge, the elimination of distance, and our problematic relationship with time and with each other in a technology-dominated environment. Exhibition schedule: Centraal Museum Utrecht, September 2–November 4, 2007 · Treasury of St. Peter’s, Leuven, November 17, 2007–January 20, 2008 · Galerie Zink, Berlin, March 15–May 4, 2008
