"Best-Designed German Books Prize," 2006
At first glance, the sculptures and large installations by Robert Kusmirowski (*1973 in Lodz) seem to be readymades, but upon closer inspection turn out to be three-dimensional trompe l'œil objects made of simple materials such as wood, cardboard, or Styrofoam. The artist therefore not only creates prints, documents, objects, and spaces, but also complex actions that refer to historical events or sites, thus transporting the issues connected to them to the present. For instance, Kusmirowski rode a 1920s bicycle from Paris to Leipzig, documented the tour by photographing it, and processed the prints so that they seem to be original photos from the time period. He presented the photographs in an exhibition space, along with an unusable reproduction of the bicycle and his own drawings, which were yellowed in order to simulate newspaper articles on the various stages of the tour. This artist's book documents all of Kusmirowski's exhibitions up to and including 2005. Exhibition schedule: Kunstverein in Hamburg, January 28-March 26, 2006
