Stadt Land Ost/City Scape East
Topographic photographs of the new German states and the documentation of structural change are two of the focuses of the VNG - Verbundnetz Gas AG in Leipzig. The concept of this ensemble is entitled "Archiv der Wirklichkeit" (Archive of Reality), connecting the exterior visible in the photographs with the interior of people who turn the pictures into memories. The change may be experienced via architecture, landscapes, objects and places: the photographs show industrial plants as well as apartment complexes, streets and cultural landscapes, interiors and backyards - in short, the entire life in Eastern Germany in the nineties. City Scape East presents works from 18 photographers, among them Johannes Bruns, Thilo KĂĽhne, Frank-Heinrich MĂĽller, Thomas Struth, Michael Schroedter, Marion Wenzel, Thomas Wolf, and Ulrich WĂĽst. It contains both brand-new photographs and photographic comparisons, with some authors having returned to the original sites of their most famous photographs. It is these comparisons in this documentation of change which highlight the idea of the collection, and present a great contribution to German identity.
