Cy Twombly is known primarily for his paintings, but his less well known sculptural oeuvre is an important dimension of his work as an artist. This large-format publication reveals his extensive body of sculptural work.
Cy Twombly, one of the most prominent artists of our time, is known primarily for his paintings. This large-format publication acquaints readers with his extensive plastic oeuvre: Inspired by Schwitters, Giacometti and surrealist object art, some of his early assemblages date back all the way to the fifties. They are composed of humble everyday found objects, which Twombly arranged in the form of magical objects or fetishes, later covering them with a uniform coat of white paint. Thus placed in a new formal context, the original meaning of individual pieces is blurred, opening them up for a wide range of associations, which more often than not refer to the expansive dimensions of cultural history. Sister arts such as literature and music appear integrated; archaic, lost civilizations become alive, even landscapes and the natural elegance of plants and blossoms - always allowing for a metaphorical interpretation - are evoked. White is still the color of Twombly´s sculptures, and their light is white, too, dematerializing them, giving them a new identity and an aura of timeless poetry. The artist: Cy Twombly, born 1928 in Lexington, Virginia. Studies at Washington and Lee University at Lexington, at the Boston Museum School in Boston, Massachusetts, and at the Art Students League in New York City. Since 1951 numerous exhibitions at galleries and museums. Twombly has been living in Rome since 1959.
