Kindergartens are a very recent element in the building spectrum, and there are opposing views about their design. Is a simulated homely atmosphere the right thing for the children? Or do they need neutral, robust spaces, "workrooms" which are not specially designed for educational purposes but furnished simply with natural light and solid fittings? The kindergarten built in 1998 by Gunter Wratzfeld, one of the pioneers of the Vorarlberg Building School along with Jakob Albrecht, Hans Purin and Rudolf Wäger, definitely falls into the second category. The economical, square ground form is exclusive in itself in its surroundings, and the wall design by contemporary artist Willi Kopf underlines even more the attitude of this architecture, which does not aim to offer prefabricated, beautiful spatial images, but the elementary qualities of building and spatial art designed to fulfil specific tasks. Introductory texts, plans and views, along with a photo documentation, present the building, which provides a clear, modern emphasis for the community in the amorphous face of the town of Koblach.
