Moritz von Schwind's art, determined by poetic narrative and exquisite sense of humour, was always seen as a great achievement of the German Late Romantic period. His fame after death still lives on today, but, for the first time after a long while, this publication offers the opportunity to rediscover the vivacity of his imagination and his art of painting and drawing. Schwind's work shows an astonishing diversity, which extends from large- scale fresco commissions - for the Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, for example, as well as for the Wartburg in Eisenach and for Schloss Hohenschwangau - to the popular illustrations and illustrated broadsheets. The total range of works is presented in this book which is filled with numerous illustrations. In addition to an extensive biography and a systematic bibliography, it contains results of recent research on various facets of the Ouvres. Many of the paintings and drawings of the German-Austrian artists are shown here to the general public for the first time. A view of related works by contemporary artists like Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld, Ludwig Richter and Carl Spitzweg round off this overview. Hence this book will become the standard work on Moritz von Schwind.
