The "Museum Insel Hombroich" is a private museum complex on the river Erft, which at first consisted of nine buildings erected by the sculptor Erwin Heerich; two more are in the planning stage. As a sculptor's work, this complex is a special case with respect to current museum architecture, because it is not obligated to any stylistic architectural tendencies and is not outstanding due to technical innovations and experiments with material. Heerich's buildings are autonomous structures developed from scultures whose uniform geometry blossoms into a rich, spatial interaction of forces, enabling an exciting dialogue with artworks of many periods and cultural areas. This publication documents for the first time all the buildings realised until now and attempts to present the combination of landscape, park and buildings, their spatial effect and their dialogue with the selected artworks in a comprehensible manner.
