The retrospective for the centennial anniversary of the German painter Julius Bissier could not have a better location than the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf. The museum possesses a large part of the complete work which includes paintings, drawings and above all the gouaches that made Bissier internationally known in the sixties. His artistic development, characterized by several stylistic changes, began with figurative painting in the circle of the Neue Sachlichkeit and led to Far Eastern art through the introduction of the Sinologist Ernst Grosse. From this starting point Bissier found his own way: with the amorphic and biotic forms of his paintings with black ink a world of abstract, symbolic and cryptic signs develop which leave traces of a meditative work of fulfilled by the most extreme amount of concentration. The silent life work of Julius Bissier, who is considered today to be an individualist and the painter who gave modern art an important impulse, is acknowledged with this extensive retrospective.
