Gunta Stölzl's work reflects in an exemplary manner the innovative and progressive concepts of the Bauhaus movement. In both her own original work and her teaching, the artist and director of the textile workshop at the Bauhaus Dessau combined the principles of modern design and sound craftsmanship, fully in keeping with the early programmatical tenets of Bauhaus. In the interplay of colour, material and technique, she created free works of art during her early years whose design clearly suggests the influence of Itten's, Klee's and Kandinsky's ideas about form and colour, revealing at the same time her highly experimental and self-assured approach to such models. During the technical- constructive Bauhaus phase, Stölzl achieved the unity of function and aesthetics called for by Gropius, making the textile workshop a flourishing productive operation. This publication by Ingrid Radewaldt, who incorporates previously unpublished draft pieces and completed pieces alongside Gunta Stölzl's personal notes on the turbulent goings-on at the Bauhaus, represents a significant contribution on the life and work of a wholly new generation of women designers that was to exercise a lasting influence on many later students of the Hochschule der Gestaltung.
