Guido Baselgia’s (*1953) photographs of light have a painterly, graphic quality about them and bear witness to his lifelong exploration of the world. This Swiss photographer is fascinated by the elemental world of nature, he finds what he is looking for in peripheral, still untouched landscapes such as high alpine mountains or the Arctic Circle. Working exclusively with analogue photography, he creates images with unimagined patterns and shades of gray. Baselgia’s passion for nature and the materiality of light refers back to a search for the beginnings of photography itself. Using a mobile camera obscura, Baselgia has captured fascinating images such as the colors of our blue planet’s sky that become visible through the refraction of light in his self-developed walk-in camera obscura.
The book, which is being published on the occasion of his exhibition at Kunsthaus Zug, brings together selected works from all of Baselgia’s work periods since the 1980s. It opens with his little-known series on Galicia in what is now western Ukraine. In the context of the ongoing war there, these images of the disintegrating Soviet Union assume a painful, new topicality. The various groups of works pay tribute to his 30 years of traveling as a photographer and light artist.
